Janel King, MA

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

Janel King grew up in San Diego as a military dependent, she is a mom, and is currently am engaged to be married. Her passion for working with children and families began with working with military families inside Morale, Welfare & Recreation (MWR) youth programs. Janel received a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and went on to attain a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.

She continued her passion for working with youth as a therapist in a residential facility for foster, adopted, and probation youth, 13-18, who have severe emotional disabilities. While at the residential facility working with abused and neglected children, it became apparent that there was something seriously missing from these youth’s lives. It was then that she realized  she could help families learn to better navigate parenting and family relationships and, ultimately, help change the outcomes of families living in low socio-economic status communities.

In 2017, Janel King began working with Mental Health America (MHA) for a pilot program for Kaiser Permanente designed to reduce the emergency room use of the elderly population. Also in 2017, she partnered with Shanelle D. Johnson, LMFT and began the journey birthing process of Urban Restoration Counseling Center.

Presently, Janel King is the program manager for MHA’s Strengthening Futures program. Strengthening Futures is a program that utilizes the Functional Family Therapy (FFT) model and provides in home family therapy to youth that are on probation and their families.  Additionally, she is the co-founder of Urban Restoration Counseling Center, which is an organization whose mission is to rehabilitate and rejuvenate the lives of members of disenfranchised communities by providing affordable outpatient counseling services.
